FAYSR is a band of one with a sound of many.
Though Brandon McPherson and his bass are rarely seen apart from one another, he has been known to perform in projects on any number of other instruments.
Stylistically, it has been no different. "My first gig was with a very heavy metal cover and original band", he says. "They came to my house on a Thursday and asked me to learn an entire show and play with them that Sunday. I didn't know any of the songs, and hadn't heard of the bands they were covering. But, I agreed to take the risk and it became my new band".
"I think I'm too stupid to know when to stop trying new stuff. I've taken gigs playing drums in a 30's swing band, trombone in a New Orleans-style funk project, vocals in a rock band, keyboards in corporate cover projects, and bass and guitar in just about any style you can think of ranging from the craziest heavy metal to contemporary R&B and jazz".
It should come as no surprise then that FAYSR was an inevitability.
Although not one to dial into any particular style of music for self-definition, his love for guitar-centric rock was what started it all.
"In my earliest years on bass, I was in a band playing very guitar-intensive music - Joe Satriani, Ozzy Osbourne, Iron Maiden... and developed a long-lasting admiration for it. When I finally sat down to begin working on FAYSR, I realized it was those influences that were steering the writing choices. So it was time to get practicing... I had a LOT of learning to do in order to get those sounds out of my head and into the world!"
PERMANENT RECORD was originally intended as its name implies - a documentation of one artist's ability to paint an entire scene, like directing a movie while playing every role. Its evolution however was something that even he didn't see coming.
There's a lot to unpack in the contents of this release - a mock bluegrass tune which a friend described as 'shred-iculous', fusion-like grooves that nod to progressive rock and Satriani-flavoured solos and more cowbell than a dairy farm. The journey from start to finish is varied and kept interesting.
So what now?
"I haven't decided to put any blinders on just yet. The future is pretty open, although FAYSR will continue to be the launchpad for my guitar-oriented writing. So, I suppose we can call this its introduction and will meet again when the next chapter of the story isready to be told."
